What happened in Maitland
The coveted trophy visited Maitland with Lexus Melbourne Cup-winning trainer and 2023 Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour Ambassador Sheila Laxon accompanying the Cup on its journey.
The ‘People’s Cup’ began its tour of Maitland on Wednesday morning at Calvary St Joseph’s Residential Aged Care, where lucky residents heard from Laxon as she shared her favourite Melbourne Cup memories while enjoying some morning tea.
Continuing its tour of Maitland the Cup stopped into a local golf charity day, before visiting Morpeth Public School for a special Lexus Melbourne Cup assembly. School students gathered to learn the history of the great race and have an opportunity to get up close with this year’s Lexus Melbourne Cup.
The Cup then travelled to East Maitland Bowling Club for an evening event where the local community were invited to get up close with this year’s Lexus Melbourne Cup for a photo opportunity and enjoy an evening to celebrate racing. Victoria Racing Club also made a special presentation to Club President William Hopkins and the guests heard from racing legend Sheila Laxon.
Maitland is a part of the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour National Sweep, which sees 24 rural and regional Cup Tour destinations across Australia allocated a barrier for the 2023 Lexus Melbourne Cup.
