ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Located 1057 kms west of Brisbane, Thargomindah is another area known for its connection with champion race rider, Darby McCarthy. I believe there is currently a documentary being made on one of Australia's elite jockeys.

What happened in Thargomindah

The People’s Cup will begin its tour of Thargomindah at the Bulloo River Hotel, where guests gathered to hear from dual Melbourne Cup-winning jockey John Letts as he shared his favourite Cup memories before getting the once-in-a-life-time opportunity to get up close with the iconic trophy.

The Cup journeyed to Picarilli station, a third generation Merino Sheep Station, to meet with some local farmers ahead of their annual Ram Selection Day before returning to town for a special Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour luncheon hosted at the Oasis Motel. In the afternoon, the coveted trophy visited Thargomindah’s Hydro Plant to take in the picturesque outback Queensland sunset.

Thargomindah is a part of the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour National Sweep, which sees 24 rural and regional Cup Tour destinations across Australia allocated a barrier for the 2023 Lexus Melbourne Cup.
