What happened in Port Fairy and Koroit
Former Racing Victoria Chief Steward and local legend Des Gleeson accompanied the Cup on its journey to Port Fairy, beginning with a ride on a Marine Rescue boat for a tour around the river before visiting the Port Fairy Surf Life Saving Club.
The Cup then headed to St Patrick’s School and Consolidated School for two special Lexus Melbourne Cup assemblies. Students in attendance learnt about the history of the great race with racing legend Des Gleeson sharing his favourite Lexus Melbourne Cup memories.
In the afternoon, the iconic trophy visited the lucky aged care residents at Moyneyana House before stopping in to visit the family of 1985 Cup-winning jockey Pat Hyland. The Cup then continued to make its way to Fiddlers Green where locals were invited to get up close with the trophy and have their photo taken.
The Cup finished its tour of Port Fairy with an evening function at The Wharf where guests gathered to celebrate the local racing community and connection to the Lexus Melbourne Cup.
The Lexus Melbourne Cup trophy also made a special stopover in Warrnambool to visit Merri River School. Students gathered to learn about the famous horses of the great race before the iconic trophy continued its journey to Koroit. While in Koroit the Cup attended a Lexus Melbourne Cup assembly at St Patrick’s School before visiting Koroit Probus for some afternoon tea with aged care residents.
To finish the tour of Koroit, the coveted trophy attended an evening event hosted at Victoria Park where guests gathered for an evening to celebrate racing and get up close with the Lexus Melbourne Cup.
Port Fairy / Koroit is a part of the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour National Sweep, which sees 24 rural and regional Cup Tour destinations across Australia allocated a barrier for the 2023 Lexus Melbourne Cup.
