Best Dressed Competition 2023
Australia, QLD

My first Fashions on the Field experience was my biggest fashion moment ever! In 2003 I wore a long wrap skirt and it found its way under a competing stiletto. Unclipping from my waist and free-falling out of my control, I was left horrified and skirt-less, a Jennifer Hawkins moment! Whipping it back around me, off I went down the catwalk with the shakes, a tilted smile and my number paddle. But wait, the very next day I found my photo on page 3 of the Herald Sun next to Paris Hilton! Thankfully I was fully dressed and clutching my umbrella, showing Melbourne how to dress appropriately for the weather. I love a story and this preloved, revamped, pantaloon, red number I am entering has one too. This opportunity has catapulted me back to a younger fashion-passionate, energetic version of myself. Exactly where I needed to be after recently moving my family interstate and feeling a little lost. Every element of this outfit has a deeper connection and story to tell starting with an online shopping mishap diverting me to rescue this jumpsuit from a vintage shop. A trip far north to meet a milliner and spark my interest into perhaps a new craft. My snazzy bumbag made its debut last Stakes Day, with its hand-free practicality, it was an envious talking point. For me, it’s about finding that special race day outfit that will present my edge and uniqueness whilst paying homage to the traditional guidelines of raceday dressing.
