2024: Millinery Award winner

2024: Millinery Award winner

Kathryn Lee, the 2024 Lillian Frank AM MBE Millinery Award winner shares her inspiration, process and advice.

VRC 22 August 2025

What year did you win, and in which category?

I won the Lillian Frank AM MBE Millinery Award in 2024. It’s Australia’s most prestigious millinery award, and it holds special significance for me because I started my career doing work experience at Lillian Frank’s Toorak salon.

Tell us about your winning look.

My piece was called “It Girl” – a 1960s helmet-style hat I designed and made myself. The inspiration came from the bold spirit of that era, and icons like Brigitte Bardot, Peggy Moffitt, and Sophia Loren. I noticed a strong 1960s influence in recent Celine, Balenciaga, and Chanel collections, so the timing felt right.

How long did it take to create?

The hat took about five weeks from concept to completion. I’d just finished a couture beading course and was keen to use those techniques. The hat features over 50 hours of hand beading with Malaysian jade and rose quartz, all stitched onto custom-dyed vintage viscose in that unmistakable 1960s candy pink. Each stone was placed for visual impact and balance – it was very detailed work.

How long have you been involved with racing or FOTF?

I’ve been part of racing fashion through my work for years. My clients regularly attend major racing events, and many have won FOTF competitions wearing my pieces. I also grew up in a racing family. My father was a racehorse trainer at Flemington until the late 1970s, so racing has been part of my life from the beginning.

What went through your mind when you were announced the winner?

It felt like a beautiful, full-circle moment. Starting at Lillian Frank’s salon and winning an award in her name was incredibly meaningful. I was a little shocked, but absolutely thrilled.

Is millinery your profession or a passion project?

It’s my full-time profession. I run a studio in Potts Point, Sydney, where I create bespoke millinery for clients across Australia and overseas. My signature style is what I call modern vintage – taking classic shapes and reimagining them for contemporary fashion.

Has winning opened new doors?

Absolutely. As part of the prize, I was featured in Vogue Australia, which has been incredible. I also attended Royal Ascot this year – a major highlight and an unforgettable experience.

What makes Flemington’s FOTF competition stand out?

The Australian racing fashion scene has such a bold personality. It’s sophisticated but unafraid to make a statement. There’s a wonderful tradition of balancing heritage with innovation, which aligns perfectly with my brand.

Has the win influenced your style?

It’s given me the confidence to embrace my modern vintage aesthetic fully. There’s clearly a genuine appetite for designs that honour traditional millinery while feeling fresh and current.

What’s your advice for new entrants?

Push beyond your comfort zone and be authentic in your design. You’ll do your best work that way. Don’t second-guess yourself – it’s such a waste of time. And never stop learning. Every mistake is an opportunity to grow.
