Kerrin McEvoy: Three Melbourne Cup wins, one lifelong dream

For Kerrin McEvoy, winning the Lexus Melbourne Cup is the realisation of a childhood dream. A three-time winner, the champion jockey reflects on the moments that have defined his career and the enduring magic of Australia’s greatest race.

As a young boy in Scone, McEvoy would wag school to watch the race on television, captivated by its drama and spectacle. Those childhood memories planted a seed that would grow into a career at the highest level of racing.

“I was always in awe of the Melbourne Cup, so it’s a fairytale,” McEvoy says.

His first victory came aboard Brew in 2000, on his debut ride in the race. He returned to the winner’s circle in 2002 with Media Puzzle before adding a third triumph aboard Almandin in 2016.

Brew’s breakthrough win remains a defining moment. McEvoy recalls waiting as long as possible before making his move, then unleashing his mount in the closing stages. Crossing the finish line, the usually reserved jockey could not contain his excitement.

“I remember yahooing a fair bit after the winning post,” he says.

For McEvoy, the race represents the pinnacle of sporting achievement, combining elite competition, history and an atmosphere unlike any other.

With another Carnival approaching, the familiar anticipation is building. Three victories have secured his place in racing history, but the ambition to add another remains.

“It's like winning the lottery 50 times over,” he says.

For the boy who once watched from home, the dream continues – with the possibility of another unforgettable moment at Flemington still firmly in sight.
