Victoria Racing Club strikes gold with Olympic champion Ariarne Titmus announced as Lexus Melbourne Cup Day Ambassador

2 September 2021 Written by VRC

The Victoria Racing Club (VRC) today announced two-time Olympic gold medallist swimmer Ariarne Titmus as the official ambassador for Lexus Melbourne Cup Day.

Ariarne captured the hearts of the nation at this year’s Tokyo Olympics, winning gold in the 200m and 400m freestyle in her first Olympic outing and placing her among Australia’s most successful swimmers.

A horse lover from a young age, Ariarne grew up riding ponies on her family’s property in Tasmania and competed in dressage and show jumping competitions before making the decision to progress her promising swimming career.

As part of her role with the VRC, Ariarne will revel in the spirit of Lexus Melbourne Cup Day, blending her love for horses, fashion, sport and celebration.

Ariarne said she was excited to be reunited with the 18-carat gold Lexus Melbourne Cup, after her first experience seeing the People’s Cup in grade 6 when the coveted trophy visited her school as part of its tour of Launceston.

“Horse riding was my first love. I grew up around horses and competed in dressage and show jumping competitions from the age of seven before swimming took centre stage. I have fond memories of my riding days and adore the strong connection that you can make with horses,” Titmus said.

“Lexus Melbourne Cup Day is a truly magical day that brings the nation and the world to a standstill. There is no event like it that brings together exceptional sport, fashion and entertainment and I’m looking forward to switching my swimmers for racewear and revelling in the spirit of the day.”

VRC Chief Executive Officer Steve Rosich said the club was delighted to celebrate Ariarne’s achievements and welcome her to the VRC’s stable of ambassadors for 2021.

“We are honoured to welcome Ariarne to the VRC family and look forward to celebrating gold in all forms with her on Lexus Melbourne Cup Day. Her spirit and determination, as well as her unparalleled talent inspired a nation this year and we are excited to celebrate her achievements alongside our other incredible athletes, both human and equine, over the Melbourne Cup Carnival,” Mr Rosich said.

The 2021 Melbourne Cup Carnival begins with Penfolds Victoria Derby Day on Saturday 30 October, Lexus Melbourne Cup Day on Tuesday 2 November, Kennedy Oaks Day on Thursday 4 November and Stakes Day on Saturday 7 November.

No matter who you are or where you are in the world, the Melbourne Cup Carnival will be accessible to all via vrc.com.au.
