Honouring an iconic win

The Victoria Racing Club honours 2006 Melbourne Cup winner Delta Blues (JPN) with a Japanese garden in the grounds of Flemington Racecourse.

"Delta Blues has won the Melbourne Cup, the champion from the land of the rising sun."

Delta Blues' historic win was the inspiration for the Japanese garden. He created history by becoming the first Japanese owned and trained horse to win the Melbourne Cup. The stable achieved a further historic feat with Pop Rock (JPN) running second.

The garden

Set within the renowned Flemington Racecourse, this serene Japanese-inspired garden offers a peaceful retreat amid beautifully curated landscapes.

Featuring an array of ornamental plants and grasses, including azaleas, mondo grass, Japanese flame grass, Nepalese blue bamboo and stone pine bonsai, the garden celebrates the beauty of traditional Japanese design.

A stunning collection of trees, from Japanese maple and Higan cherry to European beech and saucer magnolia, provides year-round colour and interest. Completing the experience is a tranquil Japanese-style waterfall flowing into a pond inhabited by graceful Japanese goldfish.
