Public Transport

Train to Flemington

Train to Flemington

We recommend travelling to Flemington by train to Flemington Racecourse station and entering via Train Gate Entry.  

Metro trains run directly between Southern Cross Station and Flemington Racecourse on all race days, unless otherwise advised by the VRC or Public Transport Victoria.

During Melbourne Cup Carnival, services depart frequently from both platforms all day, making travel simple and stress-free.

Getting to Flemington

Departing Flinders Street Station: 

10.39 AM – 1.23 PM: Express services operating direct to Flemington Racecourse.

1.35 PM – 4.52 PM: Services stopping at Southern Cross and North Melbourne, then through to Flemington Racecourse.

Departing Southern Cross Station: 

11.10 AM – 1.39 PM: Stopping at North Melbourne then express through to Flemington Racecourse.

Getting Home

Departing Flemington Racecourse:

1.36 PM – 8.59 PM: Services stopping at North Melbourne and Southern Cross, then through to Flinders Street Station.

The last train will depart Flemington Racecourse at 8.59 PM.

  • Infield drop off for bus, coach, taxi, rideshare, limousine and VHA/B/C vehicles, enter via Smithfield Road.
  • Pick up available for bus, coach, limousine and VHA/B/C vehicles from the Infield via Smithfield Road.
  • Bus, coach, limousine vehicles can remain in the Infield for the day, they will be directed to park in the Infield holding area.
  • Note: No pick up available for taxis and rideshare from the Infield via Smithfield Road. Patrons will be able to cross the track at the end of the day to leave Flemington from other course exit points.
  • The Elms rank for taxis rideshare drop off and pick up, boat mooring, bus and coach drop off.

Buses and Trams

Tram

Catch the No. 57 West Maribyrnong tram from the corner of Elizabeth Street and Flinders Street and hop off at Flemington Drive (Stop 30), located right outside the main gate to the racecourse.

Please note: Route 57 does not operate low-floor trams. Passengers using mobility aids are advised to take the train to Flemington Racecourse for easier access.

Bus

Catch Route 472 from Williamstown, Footscray or Moonee Ponds to Fisher Parade, with entry to Flemington via The Elms Gate entrance.

Or take Route 404 from Footscray or Moonee Ponds to Smithfield Road, where you can enter the racecourse through the Stables Drive entrance.

Rideshare

Patrons arriving by rideshare can be dropped off at any of the three main entrances: Main Gate, The Elms Gate, and Hill Gate.

Please note: rideshare is drop-off only. For your return trip, the only designated pick-up zone is adjacent to The Nursery, near The Birdcage pedestrian overpass.

DiDi is the official rideshare partner of the Melbourne Cup Carnival!

 Taxi's

There are three taxi ranks in operation during the Melbourne Cup Carnival:

  • Main Rank – enter via Stables Drive off Smithfield Road
  • Riverbank Rank – access via a one-way road from Smithfield Road at Riverbank Entrance (Lynches Bridge)
  • Hill Gate Rank – access from Leonard Crescent

All three ranks operate for both drop-off and pick-up, each close to a main entrance. Taxis are a quick and reliable way to leave Flemington, with a steady supply ensuring you won’t have trouble finding a ride.

Members Parking

Allocated Annual Reserved Car Sites and Ranks 1–4 can be accessed via Members Drive only.

The Members Unreserved Car Park begins from Row 15 and is accessible via Flemington Drive. Traffic management staff will be on hand on race days to guide all unreserved car park holders. 

Please note: Unreserved car parking is subject to availability. If spaces are full, members will be directed to the nearest available parking area.

 

Public Parking

Public Parking is available at the Showgrounds. Public Parking is $30 per vehicle, card only.

Footscray Shuttle

  • From 3:00 - 8:00pm across all days of Carnival, a free shuttle service will run from outside the Hill Gate to Footscray Station.

Crown Shuttle

  • From 3:00 - 8:00pm across all days of Carnival, a free shuttle service will run from the Main Rank outside the Phar Lap Entrance to Crown Casino in the CBD.

Catch a train to Newmarket station (Craigieburn line) and then either walk (10mins) or take the No. 57 tram to Flemington Drive (stop 30).

All train services are wheelchair accessible and passengers who need help boarding trains should wait on the platform near the front of the train.
