Black Caviar Lightning Race Day ushers in huge month at Flemington

A bumper month of feature racing at Flemington kicks off this Saturday 19 February on Black Caviar Lightning Race Day, with a scintillating day of racing guaranteed to set Headquarters alight.

The $1 million Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m) will be one of the races of the year, with defending champion Nature Strip to tackle Group 1 winners Home Affairs, Eduardo, Masked Crusader and 2020 Black Caviar Lightning hero Gytrash in a clash of the thoroughbred sprinting titans.

The Black Caviar Lightning honours Australia’s undefeated champion Black Caviar, who won the Lightning Stakes in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

The great mare is the last horse to successfully defend her title in Australia’s only 1000m Group 1 contest, a feat which Nature Strip will try and emulate this weekend.

The race day also acknowledges other legendary horses including Living Legends’ retired champions Redkirk Warrior and Good Ba Ba, who will parade in the mounting yard before the Black Caviar Lightning.

The undercard includes the Group 3 TAB Vanity (1400m) for fillies and the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) for colts and geldings, both of which offer a preview to the $1 million Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) on the opening day of the Flemington Racing Spectacular, Saturday 5 March.

Off the track, the race day will feature the return of the Front Lawn Beer Garden, with picnic tables and umbrellas to adorn the famous Flemington front lawn and offer racegoers the perfect spot to enjoy the day.

The space will also feature some of Melbourne’s most best food trucks alongside pop-up bars, winning post views and live entertainment in between races.

Family fun can be found on the Flemington Family Lawn, with an abundance of free children’s activities including face painting, pony rides and lawn games.

Those on track within the first hour of gates opening at 11:10am will be able to enjoy Happy Hour, with half price drinks by the glass from all retail venues across course.

Popular DJ Sgt Slick will keep the celebrations going off the track, headlining Party After The Last.

Victoria Racing Club (VRC) Chief Executive Officer Steve Rosich said this year’s Black Caviar Lightning Race Day will be one to remember both on and off the track.

“Black Caviar Lightning Race Day has always been one of our favourite race days as it celebrates the legacy of the great mare and marks the return of Group 1 racing to Flemington,” Mr Rosich said.

“Nature Strip will be trying to emulate Black Caviar by defending his title in this race, but to match the champion mare he will have to be absolutely exceptional against Australia’s best sprinters.

“It’s a race and day not to be missed, with something for everyone from the racing purists to live music lovers”.

Black Caviar Lightning Race Day sets the scene for the Flemington Racing Spectacular, which will feature Australian Guineas Race Day on Saturday 5 March, Super Saturday Race Day on Saturday 12 March and The Seppelt Wines All-Star Mile Race Day on Saturday 19 March.

Gates open at 11:10am with Race 1 at 12:40pm and the last race at 5:40pm.
