As the dust settles on a successful TAB Turnbull Stakes Day, all eyes now turn to the biggest week in Australian racing—the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
“Onwards and upwards,” says Liam O’Keeffe, Flemington’s Track Manager, who was pleased with how the surface performed during TAB Turnbull Stakes Day.
“We’re three weeks out from Melbourne Cup week and happy with how the track raced. Winners were spread across the track,” he said. “We had the rail out nine metres, but we’ll return it to the true position for Howden Victoria Derby Day.”
But it’s not just the turf getting attention—the build is on for an all-new experience across the racecourse.
In the world-famous Birdcage, Jack Streefkerk, Event Build Manager, is leading a huge logistical operation that began in July. “There are over 1,000 staff and contractors involved, from carpenters to painters,” Jack explains. “It’s been a great challenge, and we’ll have everything completed by October 24, with the big reveal on October 30.”
This year’s Birdcage includes reimagined structures, improved layouts, and premium upgrades that promise an elevated experience for racegoers.
Meanwhile, just past the winning post, a big transformation has taken place in The Elms—a space once known as a corporate area, now reimagined as a vibrant entertainment hub.
Beau Meakins, Head of Events and Entertainment, is especially excited about the changes. “What was once in the park is now in The Elms. We’ve brought the music stage closer to the action,” he said. “We’re a world-renowned event, so we’ve booked world-renowned artists.”
The 2025 music line-up is packed with big names: a legendary Aussie band will open the carnival, followed by ARIA Award winners PNAU on Lexus Melbourne Cup Day, British superstar Craig David on Crown Oaks Day, and Fisher will close out the week with a bang on TAB Champion Stakes Day.
With elite racing, cutting-edge fashion, fine food, and live global entertainment, this year’s Melbourne Cup Carnival is shaping up to be unforgettable.
“We’re only three weeks to go—this place doesn’t stop.”
