For Calvin McEvoy, Half Yours’ Melbourne Cup victory was the culmination of careful preparation, unwavering belief and a moment that will stay with the McEvoy team forever.

Confident the horse would peak on the big day, McEvoy knew Half Yours had the temperament to handle Flemington’s grandest stage. Amid the roar of 85,000 spectators, the mounting yard commotion and the pressure of Australia’s most famous race, the gelding remained remarkably composed.

“He doesn't turn a hair,” McEvoy said, reflecting on Half Yours’ ability to take everything in his stride.

As the field charged down the straight for the first time, Half Yours settled beautifully, conserving his energy for the challenge ahead. With the pressure intensifying and rivals beginning to feel the pinch, McEvoy watched as the horse travelled strongly into the final 600 metres, poised to strike.

It was a defining moment, with Jamie Melham producing a courageous ride to find the opening Half Yours needed to launch his winning charge. Horse and jockey combined at precisely the right time, turning months of preparation and belief into Melbourne Cup glory.

“I think it was a sign of a very good horse, a very brave jockey, a horse that had the determination and the will to win,” McEvoy said.

Then came the moment every racing team dreams of – the realisation that they had won Australia's most famous race.

For McEvoy, the feeling was almost impossible to comprehend. The celebrations were immediate, but the enormity of Half Yours’ achievement would take time to sink in.

“It's a life-changing race,” he said.

For the McEvoy team, Half Yours’ triumph is more than a Melbourne Cup victory. It is a defining achievement, a place in Australian racing history and a memory to treasure for a lifetime.
