Magic milestones shared at Inside Headquarters Live

12 July 2023 Written by VRC

On July 12, VRC Members gathered for the latest Inside Headquarters Live event, where they enjoyed a panel discussion hosted by Jaimee Rogers. The panel featured special guests who recounted their racing stories, while VRC Chairman Neil Wilson and VRC CEO Steve Rosich provided updates on Club news.

This year marks significant milestones for the Melbourne Cup, and each guest had an opportunity to discuss their involvement and experiences. Champion jockey Glen Boss reflected on his remarkable feat of winning the Melbourne Cup three times consecutively aboard the legendary Makybe Diva. The first of these victories occurred 20 years ago in 2003, and Boss shared his insights and cherished memories from that historic event.

Horse owner Jack Bongiorno joyfully recounted Fiorente’s win in 2013, one of many successes he has had with trainer and friend Gai Waterhouse. He also expressed his excitement at having another shot at the coveted trophy a decade later, with his mare Lunar Flare earning a ballot exemption into the Lexus Melbourne Cup for the second consecutive year.

Shelley Reys AO reflected on her father, jockey Frank Reys, as she shared memories of his remarkable achievement. It has been 50 years since Reys rode Gala Supreme to victory, making him the sole First Nations jockey to accomplish this feat in the history of the Melbourne Cup. Shelley also expressed the deep love for horses that her father instilled in her and her siblings.

The evening concluded with VRC Chairman Neil Wilson and CEO Steve Rosich providing the attendees with the latest news and information from the Club, ensuring that everyone stayed informed about the happenings within the Club.
