Meet the Milliner: Catherine Storm Millinery

23 September 2025 Written by VRC

Spring racing season is as much about statement style as it is about the thrill of the track, and no outfit is complete without the perfect headpiece. We sat down with leading designer Catherine Storm Millinery to uncover the biggest millinery trends this spring – from the return of brims and timeless classics to bold sculptural designs, standout colours and expert styling advice to ensure your race-day look turns heads for all the right reasons.

What styles are defining millinery this spring?
Brims are definitely back. Ladies have been moving away from simple fascinators to more structured pieces for a few years. From mini-boaters to larger Dior-style brims, there’s a brim option for everyone. Smart Panama-style fedoras are also very on trend and work as well with a tailored suit as a floaty spring dress.

Are there any standout colours or materials this season?
Black and white is always popular, and various shades of pink are perennial favourites – with soft blush pink especially popular this year. I’m also seeing a lot of interest in metallics, which can be coordinated with different outfits to suit the changing spring weather.

Are clients leaning more toward timeless styles or bolder pieces?
Some clients are drawn to timeless pieces that can be worn with multiple outfits over many years, while others are seeking avant-garde pieces that almost double as wearable sculpture. It’s a fun challenge to use traditional techniques and materials in unexpected ways.

What’s the best way to choose the right headpiece?
The best millinery doesn’t compete with the outfit – it completes it. The hat is the starting point for some clients, and everything else follows. For others, the dress leads the way. My advice? Choose the piece that makes you feel confident and elevates your entire look. If your outfit is detailed, opt for clean lines in your headwear; if the dress is simple, the millinery can shine. If you already have your outfit, bring it with you when you’re searching for your millinery so you can ensure that both style and colour work perfectly.

What’s your advice on matching hair to hats?
Elegant up-dos and low buns work beautifully with most pieces and keep the focus on the millinery. And always consider the wind at a racecourse – hairpins and discreet combs can help secure everything in place.

Best advice for managing your hair on the day?
If you have a perching-style hat or headband, avoid having freshly washed, smooth or straightened hair – it makes it harder to keep your millinery in place. A light spray will help give extra grip for any combs in your headpiece.

Should clients come to you with a hat or outfit first?
It’s very collaborative. Some clients come in with a clear vision, others with just a colour swatch or a mood. We discuss the outfit, event, hairstyle preferences and how bold (or classic) they want to go. We might try on several shapes to see what works best for them, then discuss materials and select colours. Most of my clients start with their outfit, giving us a springboard to create something right for them.

Any common millinery mistakes you see on race day?
Forgetting about comfort – if you’re not comfortable, it will show. Your millinery should be light, easy, and effortless to wear all day. Another common issue is choosing the wrong style for the occasion: big brims are gorgeous, but can be challenging if you spend the day in a crowded bar or marquee.

What makes a truly great race-day hat?
The wearer makes a race-day hat truly great. It should make them feel elegant, confident, and fabulous. Millinery looks very different on the workbench or on a mannequin – it truly comes alive when worn. But even the most gorgeous hat won’t shine if the wearer is uncomfortable or unsure.

What’s one surprising detail most people wouldn’t know about millinery?
What looks effortless often takes the longest to perfect. And sometimes, the final shape evolves mid-process – the hat tells me what it wants to become.
