26 August 2025 Written by VRC

Step into spring racing season with Lauren J Ritchie Millinery, where timeless craftsmanship meets bold, contemporary design. From wide-brimmed showstoppers to refined pillboxes and sculptural discs, Lauren shares her insights on the millinery styles, colours, and details defining trackside fashion this season. Whether you’re planning your Melbourne Cup Carnival look or seeking a bespoke headpiece to perfectly complement your outfit, her expert advice will help you choose with confidence and style.

What styles are defining millinery this spring?

This spring, we’re seeing an exciting mix of styles on the millinery scene. Wide-brimmed hats make a statement for those who love drama and elegance, while modern pillboxes offer a refined, vintage-inspired option. Sculptural discs are bringing bold architectural shapes trackside, and metallic headbands are adding playful movement and veiling draped over slouchy berets brings a chic element. The great thing is that there’s no single “it” style – racegoers can choose a piece that reflects their personality and complements their outfit.

Are there any standout colours or materials this season?

Colour is taking centre stage this season. You can’t go past the striking combination of red and pink for Melbourne Cup – it’s bold, modern, and perfect for making a statement. At the same time, soft pale pinks are set to be a favourite, especially in classic, timeless shapes like a boater that offer elegance and versatility.

Are clients leaning more toward timeless styles or bolder pieces?

The craftsmanship of blocking and the skilled handwork that define the art form remain absolutely central — these traditional techniques are the foundation of every great piece. What has evolved is the material palette: we’re seeing more metallic finishes, the creative use of crinolines for trims, and increasingly sophisticated wire structures that push the boundaries of form. Australia is leading the way in these innovations, blending time-honoured skills with fresh, modern design approaches to keep millinery both relevant and exciting.

What’s the best way to choose the right headpiece?

Try it on. I always encourage clients to bring their outfits into my studio so we can explore a range of pieces together. Sometimes, you will find a shape that really suits you, but you may want it in a different colour – that’s where custom-making comes in. Trying on styles in person opens up the opportunity to mix and match shapes, trims, and colours, ensuring your headpiece complements your outfit and feels uniquely yours.

What’s your advice on matching hair to hats?

The best hairstyles are those that enhance your headpiece without competing with it. Aim to create a lovely long neckline by considering how to frame your face and position the hat. Wearing your hair back behind the ears usually works best, as it keeps the focus on your features and the millinery. It’s worth practising placing your hat or headpiece before the event. Most are fitted with combs and elastic, so once secure, you won’t need to adjust them again. This way, you can relax, feel confident, and enjoy your day.

Best advice for managing your hair on the day?

Comfort and security are essential to enjoying a full day in headwear. I always suggest making the most of the combs and elastics built into your headpiece – they’re meant to keep it secure without causing discomfort. When clients visit, I offer tips and tricks for achieving the perfect fit, including adding bobby pins in strategic places for extra grip on smooth hair or adjusting the position of a bun or ponytail to complement the outfit and the hat.

Should clients come to you with a hat or outfit first?

When a client comes to me, they’ve usually chosen their outfit first, often a fabulous dress or stylish suit. That sets the tone for the overall look, and from there, we explore which hat or headpiece styles will complement it best. We’ll look at colours, shapes, and trims, and discuss how the headwear works with shoes, bags, and other accessories to ensure the outfit feels cohesive from head to toe. The aim is to create a polished, balanced look that reflects the client’s personal style and feels perfect for the occasion.

Any common millinery mistakes you see on race day?

Choosing millinery for the races is an investment, so take the time to select a piece you genuinely love – something you’ll be eager to wear again and again. A common mistake is picking a hat that doesn’t complement your outfit or feels uncomfortable to wear all day. Try various styles, think about how they coordinate with your clothing, and ensure the fit feels secure and effortless.

What makes a truly great race-day hat?

One that makes the wearer feel confident the moment they put it on. Seeing a client move with ease and pride in their piece is a joy, because I know they feel good, and that energy sets the tone for a fantastic day. The right hat doesn’t just complement the outfit; it also catches the eye of those around them, sparking admiration and conversation. It becomes part of the magic of the occasion.

What’s one surprising detail most people wouldn’t know about millinery?

A fun piece of millinery trivia is that traditionally, men’s hats are trimmed on the left side, while women’s hats are trimmed on the right, which stems from the historical practice of men escorting women on their left side. It’s a subtle detail many people don’t notice, but it’s a nod to centuries-old conventions in hat-making. While modern milliners sometimes play with or break this rule for design reasons, it’s a charming link to the craft’s history and traditions.
