Meet the Milliner: Rachel Henry

27 August 2025 Written by VRC

With three decades of hairdressing experience and a flair for creating wearable art, milliner Rachel Henry brings both style and practicality to spring racing fashion. From the revival of vintage pillboxes to bold brimmed hats reimagined with modern detail, she shares her insider tips on choosing the perfect headpiece, pairing it with your hairstyle, and embracing confidence as the ultimate accessory.

What styles are defining millinery this spring?

2025 is bringing a vintage twist. The pillbox is back – dressed up with bold trims like stylised feathers, bunched silk flowers, or sculpted bows. Brimmed hats remain a favourite for their mix of elegance and practicality. Wearable art is also having a moment, with oversized feather flowers creating a bouquet of femininity.

Are there any standout colours or materials this season?

Australians love colour – think vivid pinks and blues – but soft yellows and pastel whites, inspired by the UK, are stealing the spotlight this year.

Are clients leaning more toward timeless styles or bolder pieces?

The wide brim is reimagined with wire, lace, flowers, and stylised silk feathers instead of natural ones. These designs keep the drama but feel fresh and modern.

What’s the best way to choose the right headpiece?

Begin with styles that flatter your face shape. A simple tip: choose designs that widen your face at eye level for a balanced, oval look. Easy shapes include head huggers, berets, and medium-brim hats worn at an angle.

What’s your advice on matching hair to hats?

With my 30 years in hairdressing, I say keep it simple. A soft blowout or relaxed bun complements most headpieces without competing.

Best advice for managing your hair on – or after – the day?

Gently brush out tangles, stimulate your scalp with light massage, and show your hair a little TLC. Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp.

Should clients come to you with a hat or outfit first?

It depends. Many have their outfits locked in, so the hat becomes the finishing touch. There’s no wrong order – it’s about harmony.

Any common millinery mistakes you see on race day?

Not considering your environment. For outdoor events, think of the sun and weather. Indoors, check if a large brim will get in the way of hugs, kisses, or seating.

What makes a truly great race-day hat?

Confidence. A great hat feels effortless, part of you – not something you’re “wearing.” Comfort and self-assurance always shine through.

What’s one surprising detail most people wouldn’t know about millinery?

Millinery materials usually start flat. It’s the maker’s job to shape them into 3D art. And traditionally, women’s hats tilted right, a subtly flirtatious angle when greeting a gentleman.

Racegoers can meet milliner Rachel Henry on course at Flemington this spring, with appearances on Crown Makybe Diva Stakes Day and TAB Turnbull Stakes Day. It’s the perfect chance to chat with her about the latest trends and discover exquisite millinery and statement accessories from some of Melbourne’s finest designers - just in time for the Melbourne Cup Carnival
