Observer reigns supreme in the Australian Guineas

The Flemington Autumn Carnival began today with Observer taking out the Group 1 $1 million Australian Guineas (1600m) in emphatic fashion under the guidance of jockey Ethan Brown.

The three-year-old colt became the first horse since the Ciaron Maher‑trained Hitotsu to complete the iconic Victoria Derby - Australian Guineas double, becoming just the fourth horse in the race’s 40‑year history to achieve the feat.

The win delivered trainer Ciaron Maher his third Australian Guineas in five years, following the victories of Hitotsu (2022) and Southport Tycoon (2024).

Elsewhere on the program, the Chris Waller‑trained Birdman secured the $300,000 Group 2 TAB Blamey Stakes, earning his place in next week’s Group 1 All‑Star Mile.

The $1 million Inglis Sprint (1200m) went the way of Getta Good Feeling, prepared by Danny O’Brien and ridden by Billy Egan

Tributes at Flemington began to pour in following the news of Makybe Diva’s passing, with flowers laid at the foot of her statue in her honour.

VRC Chief Executive Kylie Rogers praised Observer’s performance and extended her condolences to the connections of Makybe Diva.

“Observer’s performance in the Australian Guineas was outstanding, and it was wonderful to see a colt of his talent add his name to such an esteemed honour roll,” Ms Rogers said.

“It was the perfect way to open the Autumn Carnival, and we look forward to welcoming racegoers back to Flemington next week for Super Saturday.”

“Today was also a day of deep sadness for our racing community as we learned of Makybe Diva’s passing. Our thoughts are with her connections as we remember a mare who shaped Australian racing history.”

The 2026 Flemington Autumn Carnival continues next weekend with Super Saturday, featuring the Group 1 $2 million Yulong Newmarket Handicap and the Group 1 $2 million All Star Mile, on Saturday 7 March and concludes with TAB Australian Cup Day on Saturday 28 March.
