Statement from Victoria Racing Club CEO Steve Rosich: 2021 Melbourne Cup Carnival crowd expectations

2 September 2021 Written by VRC

Following the Victorian Government’s announced extension of restrictions in Victoria, the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) has today confirmed to members that Sofitel Girls’ Day Out on Saturday 11 September 2021 will be closed to members and spectators.

The Club has also advised members today that, in light of the ongoing outbreak and extension of restrictions in Melbourne, we are now adjusting our Carnival plans to cater for a reduced crowd.

We are working with the Government on our scenario planning, including crowd limits and the event parameters, with these plans including priority access to VRC members. After last year’s spectator-free event, the VRC is firmly focused on delivering a very special and memorable Melbourne Cup Carnival that enables everyone across Australia to revel in the spirit of the Cup.

Subject to receiving the required Victorian Government approvals of our COVIDSafe event plan, we will communicate with members in late September the detail for the Carnival, including the daily crowd numbers, member offering and priority access and member ballot.

We are fortunate that our Melbourne Cup Carnival is later in the Victorian spring racing season, which provides us with more time to secure and implement our plans.

The Melbourne Cup Carnival kicks off on Saturday 30 October with Penfolds Victoria Derby Day, ‘the race that stops a nation’, the Lexus Melbourne Cup, taking place on the first Tuesday of November, followed by Kennedy Oaks Day on Thursday 4 November and Mackinnon Stakes Day on Saturday 6 November.
