VRC Chief Executive Officer Kylie Rogers said the club was proud to collaborate with Fantauzzo to mark these milestones in such a meaningful way.
“The Melbourne Cup Carnival has always celebrated stories of inspiration and perseverance, and few capture that spirit better than Michelle Payne and Knight’s Choice,” Ms Rogers said.
“Vincent’s ability to convey emotion, strength and character makes him the perfect artist to bring these stories to life. These treasured portraits are an incredible visual reminder of the remarkable people and animals who make Flemington so special.”
Vincent Fantauzzo, who has won the Archibald People’s Choice Award a record four-times, said the collaboration was a chance to celebrate two Australian icons in a new light.
“Meeting and painting Michelle’s portrait has been an incredible privilege.
She’s inspiring, determined and a role model to so many and when you get to know her you understand why.
I am so honoured to have the opportunity to share this work as a celebration of her 10-year anniversary,” Fantauzzo said.
“‘I’ve always felt a strong connection with horses and love building a bond with them. With Knight’s Choice I’ve portrayed his powerful physicality. In spending time at Mount Macedon, I experienced the essence of this champion - resilience and endurance, and I wanted to capture those elements in the painting.”
The works will be on display at Flemington and at various locations across Melbourne throughout Cup Week.
The VRC has a nationally significant art collection, valued at more than $11 million and comprising more than 5,000 objects that celebrate the rich history and cultural impact of racing in Victoria. From historic trophies and paintings to textiles, photographs, and memorabilia, the collection captures the enduring legacy of the Melbourne Cup and the stories that define Flemington Racecourse.
