Biologics gets look at Flemington straight

12 September 2025 Written by Racing and Sports, Craig Brennan

Biologics created an impression with her debut Pakenham win and has gone straight to Stakes level for start number two.

A run up the straight at Flemington could lead to Biologics heading to a Group 1 race on the famous straight six course during Melbourne Cup week.

Biologics runs in the Listed Cap D'Antibes Stakes (1100m) on Saturday as a potential guide to the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on November 1.

The Grahame Begg-trained filly created a huge impression with her debut win at Pakenham in May and was immediately spoken of as a potential Group 1 Thousand Guineas contender.

However, Begg has his doubts about the filly running out a strong 1600m of the Guineas at Caulfield on October 18 for which the filly currently sits on the third line of betting.

"I think she's a sprinter and I would be surprised if she ran in the Guineas or anything like that," Begg said.

"You've got to remember they've made the Thoroughbred Club Stakes a $1 million race."

The Thoroughbred Club Stakes (1200m) carries only Group 3 status and is worth $500,000 less than the Thousand Guineas and is run on November 15 at Caulfield

Biologics has been given two easy hit-outs to prepare for her racing return where she lines-up against 18 other fillies down the Flemington straight.

She has drawn gate 13 and will be ridden by Jordan Childs who rode the filly in her debut win and has been aboard in her jump-outs and trials this campaign.

"She's very well, she's in good shape," Begg said.

"If she's flying, she may run in the Coolmore, and that's the reason she's running at Flemington. It gives her a chance to have a look down the straight which is foreign to her.

"If you can give them a look beforehand it's always beneficial if you have those aspirations of a bigger race."
