Countdown to the Melbourne Cup Carnival begins for VRC Members

21 August 2025 Written by VRC

Victoria Racing Club (VRC) Members were treated to an engaging evening at Flemington on Wednesday night for the first Inside Headquarters event of the 2025-2026 racing season.

Hosted by 3AW Breakfast presenter and well-known media personality Russel Howcroft the event brought together VRC Members and the Club’s executive team, led by CEO Kylie Rogers and Chairman Neil Wilson.

Members heard from the Club on its updated strategy, vision and Melbourne Cup Carnival plans. It was also the first opportunity for the VRC to discuss with Members the early concepts being considered as part of the 2040 Masterplan.

The long-term plan outlines how the VRC will continue to innovate the precinct while preserving Flemington’s rich heritage, ensuring the racecourse remains a world-class venue for racing, events, entertainment and the wider community.

The presentation came off the back of several exciting developments for the Club, including the addition of new corporate partners and the historic announcement that the Cox Plate will be staged at Flemington next season.

A financial update was also provided, with the Club’s earnings (EBITDA) presented as being in line with the guidance at last year’s Annual General meeting, delivering a $17.9 million dollar improvement for the financial year just completed. The earnings forecast for the new financial year is expected to be significantly higher again. This financial position will enable continued reduction of debt and increased investment in early Masterplan priorities including upgrades to the racing tracks, jockeys and trainers facilities and Member areas.

A highlight of the evening was the appearance of special guest speaker Matt Hill, the celebrated voice of the Lexus Melbourne Cup. Matt captivated the audience with stories from his extensive career as a race caller and sports broadcaster, which has taken him to more than 17 countries.

He shared fascinating behind-the-scenes anecdotes, from the adrenaline of calling some of the world’s most prestigious horse races, to the challenge of switching between different sports and audiences.

VRC Chief Executive Kylie Rogers said it was a great opportunity to connect with the Club's valued Members.

“It was wonderful to welcome our Members to Flemington for a night of connection, insight and celebration,” Ms Rogers said.

“Sharing our new strategy, along with the exciting news about the Cox Plate and our strong financial position, is an important part of bringing our Members on the journey. Their passion and support are at the heart of everything we do.”

VRC Chairman Neil Wilson added, “it was a great opportunity to share the Clubs journey over the last few years and to present the strong position we are now in and the exciting outlook in many areas across the Club. Our Members have been incredibly supportive of the Club, and we look forward to continuing to enhance their experience through a range of new initiatives.”

To round out the evening, Members had the opportunity to engage directly with the VRC Executive Team in an open forum. Topics discussed ranged from the upcoming Melbourne Cup Carnival to broader industry trends and the Club’s strategic priorities. This interactive session allowed Members to share feedback, ask questions, and gain deeper insights into the planning and decision-making that shapes the future of the VRC.
