European golden tickets set to shape Cup journey

21 August 2026 Written by Ryan Kellam

In 2026, eleven golden tickets will be awarded through ballot-exempt races across Victoria, with three additional spots available through international qualifiers. This weekend, two of those coveted European golden tickets will be on the line.

The two European golden tickets will be awarded this weekend through the Ebor Handicap (2787m) at York in the United Kingdom and Group 2 Prix Kergorlay (3000m) at Deauville in France. It marks the first time the French staying feature has offered automatic entry into the Lexus Melbourne Cup.

Twenty-two runners have accepted for this year’s Ebor Handicap, which will be contested over 2787 metres at York’s historic course. The field is headed by Love Me Tender, trained by master Irish conditioner Willie Mullins, whose colours were carried to victory in 2023 by Absurde. The gelding went on to finish seventh in that year’s Lexus Melbourne Cup, won by Without A Fight.

Emit is another contender chasing a golden ticket. The gelding is trained by dual Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Joseph O’Brien and has not won since claiming last season’s Listed Marble City Stakes (2414m). However, he has produced several solid performances this campaign, including a fourth-place finish behind Wathnan Racing’s Opportunity in the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes (2400m) at Royal Ascot.

The William Haggas-trained Opportunity was an odds-on favourite last start but finished second in the Group 3 Glorious Stakes (2414m) at Goodwood. He will carry the Ebor’s top weight of 62.5kg.

In France, the Prix Kergolay has attracted a small but select field of European stayers. The race has strong connections with the Lexus Melbourne Cup, with three former winners of the Melbourne Cup coming through the Kergolay en route to Flemington; Americain (2010), Dunaden (2011) and Protectionist (2014).

Double Major heads the field as he bids for a third consecutive victory in the 3000-metre feature. His main dangers appear to be the William Haggas-trained Santorini Star and lightly-raced stayer Defiantly. The latter races in the colours of Australian Bloodstock and showcased his stamina by winning the marathon 4100-metre Goodwood Handicap. The jockey who partnered him, Dylan Browne McMonagle, will make the trip to northern France to reunite with the Joseph O’Brien-trained gelding.

Santorini Star brings strong Melbourne Cup form to the race after finishing narrowly behind 2025 Lexus Melbourne Cup runner-up Goodie Two Shoes in the Group 2 Lillie Langtry Stakes (2814m) at Goodwood last start. Regular rider Tom Marquand will accompany the mare and retain the ride, as he has done for her past seven starts.

We are three golden tickets down in the road to the 2026 Lexus Melbourne Cup, with Whisky On The Hill, Zakouma and Tawny Port, already booking their place in the race that stops a nation®. All eyes will be on York and for the first time, Deauville, to see who can join them.
