Meet the Milliner: Felicity Northeast

29 August 2025 Written by VRC

For milliner Felicity Northeast, spring is about balancing timeless elegance with fresh individuality. From pillboxes and boaters to sweeping brims and sculptural bows, her designs celebrate both tradition and modern flair. With soft pastels, textured straws, and bold splashes of colour leading the season, she shares her expert advice on choosing the perfect headpiece, styling your hair, and avoiding common race-day mistakes.

What styles are defining millinery this spring?
This season is all about timeless elegance with a modern twist. Pillboxes remain favourites for their sleek simplicity – worn either at the back for a classic look or more centrally for a fresh feel. Boaters continue their strong presence, and large brims are making a comeback with Dior-inspired silhouettes, fedoras, and upward-flipping edges, adding drama and height. Smaller styles like berets are perfect for seated events, especially when combined with veils – from birdcage styles to soft drapes over brims or boaters. Bows also have a moment, ranging from sculptural statements to delicate organza tied around the crown. That said, the best hat is always the one that makes you feel confident, comfortable, and unmistakably yourself.

Are there any standout colours or materials this season?
This season, texture takes centre stage. Inspired by recent European runways, we see millinery layered with vintage straws, veils, and intricate braids – creating depth and movement. In terms of colour, pastels make a graceful return for Spring 2025. Soft lemon is emerging as the standout shade – fresh, flattering, and perfect for spring. Expect to see it alongside other muted tones like powder blue and blush. Of course, Melbourne’s Spring Carnival wouldn’t be complete without bold splashes of colour. Reds, oranges, and vibrant pinks always make an impact, and this year is no different. Whether you’re drawn to soft sorbet tones or head-turning brights, there’s something for every mood and style.

Are clients leaning more toward timeless styles or bolder pieces?
Both. Modern millinery comfortably balances tradition and innovation. Many still prefer classic silhouettes for their elegance and practicality, but others are increasingly attracted to sculptural, avant-garde styles that express their individuality. As a milliner, I love that I can craft a timeless piece one day and push boundaries the next – the joy lies in the diversity.

What’s the best way to choose the right headpiece?
Often, the dress comes first – and that’s perfectly fine. However, for those who truly want their hat to stand out, I always recommend beginning with the headpiece. It can set the tone for the entire outfit. The real magic happens when you collaborate with a milliner. Trying on different styles, shapes, and colours – and receiving advice on what suits your features – transforms the process into a creative experience.

What’s your advice on matching hair to hats?
Hair plays a key role in showcasing a headpiece. Revealing one side of your neck often looks beautiful. For dramatic hats, choose a sleek bun or a sharp ponytail. If your hat is angled, balance it by sweeping hair to the opposite side. Simpler styles on headbands go well with loose waves for a softer appearance. And on windy days? Keep bobby pins handy and cross them over the elastic to anchor your hat. You can also braid or twist hair where the comb sits – a discreet trick that keeps everything secure.

Best advice for managing your hair on the day?
Prioritise comfort. Your hat should feel secure, never tight. After a long day, skip the brush. Instead, finger-comb your hair and apply a light spray or dry shampoo to quickly revive volume and freshness.

What makes a truly great race-day hat?
It’s the one you keep reaching for, not only because it looks fantastic, but also because it holds the joy of past race days. A truly great hat is memorable, meaningful, and makes you feel fabulous every time you wear it.

What’s one surprising detail most people wouldn’t know about millinery?
If your hat ever feels too snug or slips, it’s usually an easy fix. Many milliners sew elastics so they can be unknotted, adjusted and re-tied – a minor, discreet tweak that makes a huge difference in fit and comfort.
