Michelle Payne shares Melbourne Cup inspiration in Longwood

7 July 2026 Written by VRC

Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Michelle Payne returned to regional Victoria as part of the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour, visiting the Longwood community alongside Living Legends champion Twilight Payment.

The visit brought the iconic Lexus Melbourne Cup to the heart of the town, where locals gathered during a community football and netball day to celebrate Australia's most famous sporting trophy. For Payne, who grew up in country Victoria, the tour was an opportunity to connect with regional communities and share the inspiration the Melbourne Cup continues to provide.

"It's great to be on the tour and up here in the community of Longwood where they've had a pretty tough time," Payne said. "

To be able to connect with the community spirit of the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour and be here at Longwood is really, really special."

Payne said bringing the Lexus Melbourne Cup to country communities alongside Twilight Payment made the experience even more memorable.

"It's great to be up here with Twilight Payment to bring the Cup into the country surrounds. He's a great little model, he loves to pose for a photo, and it's very special to be here and be part of the tour."

Reflecting on the 11th anniversary of her historic Melbourne Cup victory aboard Prince of Penzance, Payne said the achievement still felt surreal.

"It's incredible to think it's been 11 years already, but it still feels like yesterday. Prince of Penzance and I were able to achieve a dream I'd had since I was five years old. The Lexus Melbourne Cup is exciting every year and you never stop dreaming that you might be able to take it home."
