The Victoria Racing Club (VRC) kicks off the Group 1 racing season at Flemington on Saturday 13 September for Crown Makybe Diva Stakes Day with a full day of on-track and off-track excitement.

Fashions on the Field makes a glamorous return to the Front Lawn, while legendary three-time Melbourne Cup champion Makybe Diva will be on-course to meet fans in person and lead out the field in the $750,000 Group 1 Crown Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at 3:35pm.

The feature promises a mouth-watering contest with five individual Group 1 winners, headlined by recently crowned Australian Horse of the Year Via Sistina, and the world’s best jockey, James McDonald who returns to Flemington. The star mare will face stiff competition from defending champion Mr Brightside, stablemate Aeliena and Queensland galloper Antino.

The VRC will honour past Lexus Melbourne Cup champions with honorary memberships presented to Cup winning trainers and jockeys after Race 4 in the Mounting Yard. Racing royalty Glen Boss, Tony Santic, Lee Freedman, and David Hall will reunite to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Makybe Diva’s historic third Melbourne Cup victory. Trainers Gai Waterhouse AO and Chris Waller will also be in attendance for the special recognition.

The $300,000 Group 3 Lexus Archer Stakes (2500m), offers a golden ticket into the 2025 Lexus Melbourne Cup with in-form horse Jennivamoose looking to secure her spot in this year’s race. Other feature races on the day include the $300,000 Group 2 HKJC World Pool Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) and the Group 2 Kirin lchiban Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m).

Away from the world-class racing action, Fashions on the Field returns with an on-course competition and Best Dressed and Best Suited titles up for grabs. Winners of each category will earn themselves fast-tracked entry to the Crown Oaks Day Daily Final.

There is fun for the whole family with pop-up bars, food trucks, and live music throughout the afternoon on the Front Lawn.

VRC Chief Executive Officer Kylie Rogers said she was looking forward to the first Group 1 race day of the new season at Flemington.

“There is a real buzz in the air for this weekend's Crown Makybe Diva Stakes Day, with some of the best horses in the country set to compete. The feature race is shaping up to be an epic contest headlined by Via Sistina who returns to Victoria for the first time this spring” Ms Rogers said.

“It is a privilege to welcome champion, Makybe Diva back on-track to meet fans, coinciding with the anniversary of her historic third Melbourne Cup triumph. We thank Tony Santic and the team at Makybe Stud for sharing her with the racing public.”

“The race day is the perfect start to an action-packed spring, setting the scene for the next two months at Flemington as we build up to this year’s Melbourne Cup Carnival.”
