Cultivating Connection: Flemington’s "Keeper of the Roses" shares his craft

20 June 2025 Written by VRC

Some VRC Members recently enjoyed a rare opportunity to go behind the scenes with Flemington’s ‘Keeper of the Roses,’ Mick Ryan, and his team. Held among the famous rose beds surrounding the pre-parade ring, the exclusive workshop brought together those who share a passion for roses and gardening. Participants received an inside look at what it takes to maintain one of Australia’s most iconic gardens.

With decades of experience at Flemington, Mick shared practical pruning tips and expert insights into rose care, though he noted he was only giving away 95 per cent of his secrets: “I keep the other five per cent up my sleeve. Otherwise, I’ll be out of a job.”

The hands-on session covered seasonal techniques and the careful process that keeps Flemington’s 16,500-plus roses thriving. Mick and his team were available to answer questions and demonstrate the precision involved in their work.

For members who admire the roses in full bloom each spring – and enjoy working with them in their gardens – the workshop provided a unique opportunity to learn directly from the experts who tend to them with such care. It was also a chance to share in their passion and appreciate the dedication behind the scenes that contributes to creating Flemington’s signature look, one rose at a time.
