Sir Lucan, formerly trained by Aidan O’Brien, has been nominated by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott while Glycon has been nominated by French trainer Jean-Claude Rouget.
This brings the total number of horses nominated for the 2021 Lexus Melbourne Cup to 175 including 16 internationals.
Sir Lucan joins Gold Trip and Surefire as high-profile international Lexus Melbourne Cup nominees to be transferred to local trainers and will enter quarantine at the Werribee International Horse Centre, with Gold Trip nominated by the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace stable, and Surefire nominated by Chris Waller
Other horses to fall into this category include Pondus, previously trained by Joseph O’Brien, and current Lexus Melbourne Cup second favourite Dawn Patrol. Both horses have arrived at Macedon Lodge from Irish trainer Joseph O’Brien to be trained by Australian trainer Robert Hickmott.
Sir Lucan is a lightly-raced son of Camelot who is a Listed winner and was most recently runner up in the Group 3 Gordon Stakes at Goodwood.
Glycon is a dual Group 3 winner in France including the Group 3 Prix de Reux at his last start.
VRC Executive General Manager Racing Leigh Jordon said Sir Lucan and Glycon were great additions to the Lexus Melbourne Cup nominations pool.
“Sir Lucan and Glycon are talented stayers and strong nominees for the Lexus Melbourne Cup,” Mr Jordon said.
“Sir Lucan is particularly exciting given he has been nominated for Flemington trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott.
“Gai famously won the Cup in 2013 with another former international galloper in Fiorente so she knows exactly what it takes to win our great race.”
Also this year, the winner of each of the Group 2 Great Voltigeur Stakes (18 August), Group 2 Lonsdale Cup (20 August), Ebor Handicap (21 August) and Group 2 Prix Kergorlay (22 August) is eligible to be nominated as a late entry by Wednesday 25th August 2021.
The Lexus Melbourne Cup will be run on Tuesday 2 November as part of the iconic Melbourne Cup Carnival which begins with Penfolds Victoria Derby Day on Saturday 30 October and also features Kennedy Oaks Day on Thursday 4 November and Mackinnon Stakes Day on Saturday 6 November.
All the action from the 2021 Melbourne Cup Carnival can be seen free to air on Network 10.
